Palmetto Door Controls & Glass and American Glass and Glazing are both family-owned and both based in Myrtle Beach. If you're a Grand Strand homeowner, property manager, or contractor gathering quotes, you'll probably hear from each of us. A lot of the residential and commercial glass we do overlaps. The specialties don't.
Palmetto's site presents the company as a glass and door specialist, and it carries automatic entrances and access control. We lead with custom residential glass and commercial glazing, and we hold a South Carolina unlimited general contractor license. We're AGG, so keep that in mind as you read.
To keep it fair, we've stuck to what each company publishes and what Google shows. Every Palmetto detail below comes from its own website and Google listing, as we checked them on October 5, 2026. We'll cover scope, commercial credentials, heritage, reviews, how pricing works, and warranty.

Two real companies with different strengths. What you're building decides which one makes sense.
Most of our days go to custom glass for homes. Frameless showers in 3/8" and 1/2" tempered glass, semi-frameless in 5/16" and 3/8". Custom cut mirrors, glass railings, insulated glass unit replacement, tabletops, shelving, even glass wine cellars. We template every piece to the space and build it to fit. Our custom frameless shower doors and enclosures page shows how that work runs from measure to install.
Commercially, we do storefronts, curtain wall and architectural glazing, building envelope restoration, commercial window replacement, partitions, and emergency repair. A good share of it comes to us as the glazing sub-trade for general contractors and restoration firms.
Palmetto's published scope is wide as well, and we want to describe it accurately. On its residential glass page you'll see shower enclosures, window glass replacement, mirrors and custom mirror frames, glass tabletops and shelving, patio door systems, handrails, pattern glass, and kitchen backsplashes.
The commercial glass page lists storefronts and entrances, curtain wall, glass partitions, impact and security glass, convenience windows, folding and sliding doors, privacy and switchable glass, aluminum and steel doors, door repair, and commercial handrails. Then there are automatic entrances, automatic door maintenance plans, and access control systems, which its website also covers.
That's a real overlap. Showers, mirrors, tabletops, railings, window glass, storefronts: both of us do them. The difference is capability. Palmetto also carries automatic entrances and access control. On our side, it's custom residential depth and commercial glazing credentials.
On automatic entrances, Palmetto's credentials are specific, and you can check them. According to its website, it is an authorized distributor for automatic-entrance manufacturers and an AAADM-certified service provider with AAADM-certified technicians.
AAADM is the American Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers. The site also names a long list of automatic-door brands its technicians service, and it offers preventative maintenance plans twice a year. Is your project built around an automatic sliding or bi-fold entrance? Then that specialty matters, and you should weigh it.
Glazing is where we're strong. American Glass and Glazing is a fully licensed South Carolina general contractor, unlimited classification with no height limit. One recent job was a 21-story oceanfront project, seven months from mobilization through commissioning, where we were the glazing sub-trade under architect spec.
We also offer AIA/CES architect-spec collaboration through YKK AP. In practice that makes it easier for architects and project teams to land on the same system. The glass sub-contractor services page explains how we work with GCs and restoration firms.
Each company earned its commercial credentials. They're aimed at different parts of the building, that's all.
Palmetto's homepage cites "over 26 years of automatic door expertise and 50+ years of glass experience," and its footer describes the company as family-owned "with over five decades of combined experience in the Myrtle Beach area." That's a long run in this market. It counts.
Our side of it is owner DJ Sorensen, who runs the company with 19 years in the glass industry. We formed American Glass and Glazing LLC in 2021 to bring that experience under one licensed company. Our article on why experience matters when choosing a glass company tells more of that story.
Both are family businesses with deep local roots, just measured differently.
Use these with us, with Palmetto, with anybody. A good shop will answer every one without flinching.
1. How long has the company operated, and how much experience does the owner or lead installer have? Those are two different numbers. Get both.
2. What South Carolina license do you hold, and what classification? Classification sets what a contractor is legally allowed to take on. You can look up any SC license through the state's LLR licensing lookup.
3. What manufacturer relationships and certifications do you hold? Find out which product lines the crew is trained or certified to install and service.
4. Can you share references for projects like mine? A bathroom shower is nothing like a high-rise window package.
5. How do you handle code compliance on the coast? Out here you'll run into safety glazing, impact requirements, and guard rules.
6. What insurance do you carry, and can you send a certificate of insurance? On commercial work, ask about bonding as well.
Jot down what each company says and keep it next to their written quote.
Here's what we bring. You can check every piece of it.
License. A fully licensed South Carolina general contractor, unlimited classification with no height limit. You can look it up through the state's LLR licensing lookup.
Project precedent. We were the glazing sub-trade under architect spec on a 21-story oceanfront commercial project that ran seven months, mobilization through commissioning.
Architect collaboration. AIA/CES architect-spec collaboration through YKK AP, which we use for spec sessions with architects and project teams.
Reviews. On October 5, 2026, we had a 4.9★ rating on Google. Palmetto showed 4.5★ on Google that same day. Those are both good numbers. Honestly, the reviews themselves will tell you more.
Warranty. Ours is published. We give a one-year workmanship warranty on our own installation work and pass the manufacturer warranties on glass and hardware through to the homeowner or general contractor. Full terms, exclusions included, are on our warranty page. We couldn't locate written warranty terms on Palmetto's website as of October 5, 2026. That isn't the same as saying Palmetto has no warranty. Whoever you're considering, get the terms in writing before you sign.
Palmetto's website cites 26+ years in automatic doors and 50+ years of glass experience. Ours rests on owner DJ Sorensen's 19 years in the industry. The LLC dates to 2021. Both have real local experience. It's just counted differently.
Palmetto holds the automatic entrance credentials: authorized distributor for Nabco Gyro-Tech and Entrematic, AAADM-certified technicians, and a per-door maintenance program. We don't hold those, so for an automatic entrance Palmetto is the specialist pick.
Published prices can't answer that fairly. Custom glass is quoted one job at a time. For either company, the number comes from size, glass thickness and type, hardware finish, and site conditions. We both offer free estimates. Get written quotes on the same scope and go through them line by line. Palmetto does publish per-door annual pricing for its automatic door maintenance plans.
Specialty. We lead with custom residential glass and our commercial glazing credentials, meaning the general contractor license, the 21-story precedent, and architect-spec collaboration through YKK AP. Palmetto offers a broad residential and commercial glass menu, plus automatic entrances and access control.
